What the Shore Conference really did

December 9, 2023 Posted by LSN Sports

2024 Shore Conference football divisions.
The L or W after a team name indicates my opinion on whether the team was a loser or winner by these new divisional placements. Separating the teams by whether they are in Monmouth or Ocean County has never been a fair way to pick a teams/schools divisional placement IMHO. I believe that geography, rather than level of play, has been, in some cases, the more important factor in developing these new divisions. I agree that there is no perfect solution to creating new divisions and that the new divisions resemble the older past divisions, however, the beauty of the most recent divisions was that a teams record was primarily used to move a team up or down a division, much like ice hockey has been successfully doing for years.

1 American Division – Colonial Division
Wall has yet to recover from past issues and should move down to the Colonial Division
Point Boro, unlike others in the Colonial Division, has consistently had winning seasons and playoff appearances and should come up to the American Division

2 Constitution Division – Colonial Division
Red Bank has been struggling lately and should come down to the Constitution Division in order to have any success
Holmdel, based on it’s success, should come up to the Colonial Division

3 Freedom – Independence
Southern has not been able to muster up a successful season in the Freedom Division and should come down to the Independence Division.
Brick Memorial has been able to show signs of their former selves, and should move up to the Freedom Division

4 Liberty Division – Patriot Division
Central and Neptune have both struggled of late and would be more productive in the Patrit Division
Keyport and Manchester appear to have turned the corner and are ready to be challenged in the Liberty Division

Year Thirteen Week Twelve “From the Sidelines” With Coach Scarpa

November 30, 2023 Posted by LSN Sports

Coach Scarpa has 25 years of experience coaching High School Football and is most noted as “The Defensive Coordinator” with the number one defense in the shore. His defenses have consistently finished in the top ten. He is the former defensive coordinator at both Toms River East and Monsignor Donovan High Schools (Now Donovan Catholic). He has served a combined 23 years as a color analyst for the Toms River Schools TV 21, LSN Sports, and the NFHS Network respectively. Coach Scarpa’s blog will appear weekly during the high school football season.

Congratulations to Toms River North on their 23-13 win over Passaic Tech. This is the second year in a row that the Mariners defeated Passaic Tech. to become the Group 5 State Champion.

Rumson fell in a valiant struggle to Westwood 21-20 in a Group 2 State Final.

Congratulations to Toms River South for winning the Liberty Division. Their first division title in 21 years.

Congratulations to Red Bank Catholic on their 14-7 victory over DePaul to capture the Non-Public B State Championship.

LSN Final Top Ten:
1 Red Bank Catholic
2 Donovan Catholic
3 Toms River North
4 Point Boro
5 Rumson
6 Middletown South
7 Marlboro
8 Holmdel
9 Long Branch
10 Brick Memorial

End of Season;
Offense Players of the Year:
Sheehan, Middletown. North
Ford, Toms River North
Oliphant, Point Boro
Dietz, Brick Mem.
Thomas III, Donovan Catholic
Glenn, Jackson Mem.
Ross, Red Bank Catholic

Defensive Players of the Year:
Gallagher, Middletown. South
Brewton, RBC
Moyers, Donovan
Boland, TRN
Pruitt, TRN
Day, Donovan Catholic
Elsas, RFH

Coach of the Year
Mike Lange, Red Bank Catholic

FYI:
Middletown North’s QB Luke Sheehan, is the best pure passing QB I have seen in years.

Although Toms River North won the Group 5 State championship, they did not win the American Division of the Shore Conference where they were defeated by both Donovan Catholic and Red Bank Catholic and finished third in the Shore

Four Star Safety Kaj Sanders out of Bergen Catholic has committed to Rutgers.

“Bowl Eligible.” Rutgers lost to Penn State 27-6 and to Maryland 42-24, they will now most likely play in the Pinstripe Bowl vs Georgia Tech. Another possible opponent is Kansas in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.

You become a champion by fighting one more round. When things are tough, you fight one more round. James J. Corbett

Last week’s game: Toms River North won yet another sectional championship with their 49-
14 victory over Washington Twp.

LSN Top Ten:
1 Red Bank Catholic
2 Donovan Catholic
3 Toms River North
4 Point Boro
5 Rumson
6 Middletown South
7 Marlboro
8 Holmdel
9 Long Branch
10 Brick Memorial
Colts Neck Jackson Freehold Twp Toms River South Middletown North

FYI:
Shore teams still in the mix for a Group State Championship: Red Bank Catholic, Donovan Catholic, Toms River North, Rumson

Still fighting for a state championship from the Shore Conference is 11-2 Toms River North in a rematch with 13-0 Passaic Tech in Group 5, TR North won 28-7 last year, Rumson in Group 2 will be playing Westwood at Rutgers and #1 Red Bank Catholic vs DePaul in Non Public B

C’mon man!
Red Bank Catholic is in Non-Public B; a significantly reduced group with only 6 total members while Donovan Catholic is in Non-Public A with13 members.
Non-Public B #1 RBC will play #3 DePaul in the finals, while Non-Public A #4 Donvan Catholic will play #1 Bergen Catholic in the semi-finals.

In Non-Public A, seed 1 seed 2 and seed 3 all received an initial Bye, while 4 seed Donovan Catholic was forced to play in the first round against #13 Paramus Catholic.

Toms River North may very well be the favorite to win the largest Public Division, Group 5, however, they did not win the American Division of the Shore Conference being defeated by both Donovan Catholic and Red Bank Catholic. North is currently ranked #3 in the LSN Top Ten.

Our Next Game: Toms River North Mariners @ Cherokee Chiefs

“Bowl Eligible.” Rutgers was shut out against a very tough Iowa team.
